Maps and Pictures

• Atlas Historique de l'Antiquite Tardive. A large collection of maps portraying the late antique world. In French.
• Europe Image Library. Lots of pictures pertaining to ancient Greece and Rome.
• Maps of the Roman Empire. Excellent 19th-century maps, available for viewing in two sizes.
• Medical Instruments. Pictures of finds from the House of the Surgeon in Pompeii.
• The University of Texas Map Collection - Historical Maps. Includes a couple of useful maps, including one based on the Peutingerian tables.
• Virtual Tour of Ancient Rome. Great pictures on this tour!

USENET Newsgroups

Here are a few newsgroups that could be of interest to those studying the Romans. I will add more as time goes by.

• alt.archaeology - Almost entirely taken over by bizarre net.kookery of one type or another. Contains the occasional diamond in the rough.
• humanities.classics - Lots of chit-chat about Latin, Greek, etc. This group is designed to replace the old sci.classics group, which may or may not still be active.
• sci.archaeology - The basic archaeology newsgroup, somewhat prone to invasion by wandering kooks. There is some good material available here on occasion though.
• soc.history.ancient - Not specifically an archaeology group, but you will find much discussion of things Roman here.
