48. Charles4 Busey (Edward3, Paul2, Paul1, ElizabethA ?) was born in MD ca 1740. He died bef 1820:.
He married Martha ? :. Martha was born bef 1750:. She died after 1800:. I think there is reason to believe that Martha's last name was Kirk. Thomas Kirk was a surety for Charles Busey when he administered his father's estate. This Thomas was likely a son of Thomas Kirk, Sr. Note that Charles and Martha Busey had a son Thomas, the first of that name in the family. Of course, they did not have a son Edward, but most families had children who died in infancy, and there was a younger son named Edmund. In 1775 or 1776, Charles served as a sergeant in Capt. Samuel Plummer's Company from the middle district of Frederick Co, MD. This company also included Ensign Thomas Kirk.(86) In March 1777, Charles was the ensign in Capt. Ralph Hilleary's Company of the 33rd Battalion of the Maryland Militia. This company included Lieutenant Thomas Kirk and Private Edward Busey.(87)
Charles Busey is listed as being between 16 and 50 years of age and an inhabitant of Montgomery Co, MD, on 30 Aug 1777, along with Ben:, Paul, Edwd. and Henry Busey on the list of Zadock Magruder.
On 26 Feb 1778, Charles Busey took an Oath of Affirmation of Fidelity and Support to the state, as acknowledged by his mark "X". Edward and Paul Busey took the oath that same day.
On 23 May 1778, Charles Busey acknowledged by his mark "X" the adminstrator's bond for this father's estate, along with Thos. Kirk (by signature) and Wm. Duvall, Sr. (apparently by mark), his sureties. [Frdk Co Reg of Wills Admin Bonds, Original, MdHR 9499-2] I can't help but wonder if Charles' wife wasn't a Kirk. Surely at least one of these two men was somehow related to Charles.
When the inventory of his father's estate was filed in 19 Aug 1778 in Frederick Co, Charles Busey was noted as administrator. He served in that capacity at least until 1780.
When his brother Henry married on 13 Oct 1778 at the Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles Busey was one of the witnesses. He also witnessed the marriage of Jacob Roads and Ann Cash on 23 Apr 1780 at the same place.
In the reutrn of the Officers of the Upper Battalion of Montgomery County, MD, 10 Apr 1779, Chas. Busey was noted as the First Lieutenant of Maj. Spriggs' former company.
Per the Frederick Co Judgement Book (page 463) November term 1782, Charles Bucey posted bail for Benjamin Nicholls. In March 1783 (p. 535) the bail was satisfied.
In 1789, Charles Busey by mark "X" acknowledged a sale of a horse in Frederick Co (WR#8:738). He sold land in the Urbana District of Frederick County, east of the Middle Monocacy River, along Winter's Run, to Thomas Burgee on 12 Dec 1789. [8-738 Frederick Co Deeds]
Charles appears in the 1790 Federal census of Maryland in Frederick Co. On 5 Sept 1798, there was a letter for Charles Busey of Bennett's Creek remaining at the post office in Frederick Town. In the 1800 Federal census of Maryland, Charles is again found in Frederick County, next to his son Thomas Busey.
Evidence suggests that Charles migrated with his children to Jefferson County, Ohio, about 1806. On 5 Jan 1809, Charles Busey sold chattels to Michael Rine in Jefferson Co, Ohio. This sale was acknowledged by mark "X" (note that Charles Jr. also used this mark). The sale of 4 feather beds and bedding, 100 bushels of corn, one horse, two plows, a pot, a kettle, 12 pewter plates and 2 dishes for $100, would appear to be the household effects of Charles Sr.
No estate file for Charles Sr. has been found.
