How to...  The Step by Step Deal  |

Guidelines

DO's and DON'T's

DO include a disclaimer (to save the law suit kinda deal) and authors notes.  It's also helpful if you say which season your fic is set in or more specifically, which episode it's after.  Helps the reader.  "Oh this is before New Moon Rising so Riley doesn't know about Angel and Oz isn't back yet.."

DO include an e-mail address so I can get hold of you if there are any difficulties any peeps can send feedback.  I know you crave it - me too.  However if ya don't want flames and all from people that read your stories then just say so in your email but you need to give me it.

DO spell check your work.  It's not enjoyable to read pieces that lok as if a 2nd grader wrote them.  (Or primary 4 for those of you elsewhere- like me)

DO NOT use tabs to show a new paragraph. DO NOT use two spaces identing the line to show a new paragraph.  Separate paragraphs by double lines. If your paragraphs are not separated by lines, when it is posted on the site, it will be one large mass of text because HTML doesn't pick up on some of these conventions.  I take no responsibility for what the story looks like when posted on the site if you didn't follow the submission rules.  I do try to 'neat the place up a bit' to quote our lost Doyle but time maybe an issue.  Every time a new person talks, this is a new paragraph. Stories in script form or that start of the next paragraph just by going to the next line must be altered so that they are double spaced.  Do you get me?  Thought not.

EXTRA- I have just read a fic which had a really nice concept and plot going but I had to stop reading because the paragraphs were all smushed together, not taking a line between each person.

EXAMPLE: "Hey," Willow said. "Hey," Oz replied.  "How have you been?" Willow asked him. "Cool.  As usual, I'm cool." "Great!" Exclaimed Xander.

To me and lots of other people, this kind of formatting is annoying and unreadable.  With the fic I was reading, I thought I'd put in the paragraphs myself but I got bored and decided to give up.  There is a 90% chance that if your fic looks like this, people will give up and decided 'to Hell with it' which is a shame if it is a good fic.  You could find beta readers to correct this for you.

DO only submit completed stories.  If you aren't finished but are itching to post it, I suggest you make it part one of a two part (or more) story then simply write 'to be continued..'  Eh eh?  Very clever dontcha think?

DO make sure your story is a substantial length before you submit.  Effort people!  There is nothing more annoying when reading a fic, it's essentially as long as these guidelines and 3/4 had been taken up by song lyrics.  I read a fic like this once and I was so 'grrr' I didn't read any other fics by that author. I'm not gonna make the effort reading if people don't make the effort when writing.

WHEN you submit your story, make sure it has your name (net name is fine), your email, brief description, disclaimer, authors notes, catergory (such as Buffy/Angel, general, Willow/Xander) rating (for more info please click here ) and of course, story title.  If you're not sure what i mean, check out one of my fics to see the layout

Sorry for going on but it makes my bit easier and the readers happier if we're all on the same page.

So That In Xander Form

1.  Authors name

2. Title of story

3. Number of parts

4. Brief description of your story, it attracts the readers

5. Rating and category.  (More info, see here )

6. Spoilers.  Anything in your story that will spoil the enjoyment of the viewers who have to wait an extra year or so before the shows air.

7. Time line.  Also you can add authors notes and dedications

8. All the stories in this archive are covered by my disclaimer.  By submitting, you are agressing that Buffy and co. are Joss Whedons property and you're just having 'harmless wolf fun' with them and will return them.

9. Email address and whether you want feedback or not (ha!)

10. Proof read and edited.  Makes for much more enjoyable reading

11. All these should be at the beginning of your document.  If you're none the wiser, check out one of my fics to see the layout.  I have as much pre-fic notes as I can possibly think of.  Know why?  because I can.  And you can too.

12. Stories can be sent in html form, Word, wordpad, Microsoft Works, Notepad.  However, it's preferably cut and pasted into email.

Ratings

G - General audiences.  Universal

PG-13 -  For twelve and older.  An episode like "When She Was Bad"  Usual Buffy episode.

R - For fifteen and older.  An episode like "Passion" or "Where The Wild Things Are."  Movie examples: "Cruel Intentions"; "Valentine." Some mild sex, violence and swear words.

NC-17 - The whole nine yards

Catergories

A Buffy/Angel catergory story is where Buffy and Angel are the focus of attention or the plot revolves around them and their starcrossed on/off relationship.  Xander/Anya for a Xander and Anya story where they are the main peeps.  General for a normal (!) plot which includes everybody as much as everyone else and so on.
Poetry and cross overs such as 'Roswell' and 'Buffy' characters together or X-Files. and whatever else your twisted little mind comes up with.  DO NOT include Angel or Cordy coming back to Sunnydale as a crossover story cuz it makes it too complicated and they really are the same stream of characters and are involved in each others worlds to an extent.
