Give me just a couple of minutes to tell you haw yu can be rich! I mean really rich! I heard
a story of an oil millioinaire from Texas (aren’t they all?) who loved to spend his millions
on big, big, fancy cars. This was so much a consuming passion, that, when he died, his last
request was honored. He wanted to be buried in his biggest and fanciest car.
One of the attendees at the funeral was heard to exclaim, “Look at that! Boy, that’s really
living!” Well, that man was rich in all that money could buy, but, to my knowledge, he was
extremely poor in what really matters most in life. His “spiritual bank book” was as empty
and he was totally spiritually bankrupt.
Jesus spoke of another rich man, who had it all and a lot of all of it. He would pass a poor,
sore-covered beggar each day on his way to his home from the busy streets of his town.
He never gave to the beggar, or attempted in any way to relieve the man’s suffering, nor
did he regard any man or God. Wealth was all he strived for and he had obtained it. To his
thinking he had no need or any kind, and if he had, he could buy the fulfillment of it. One
day he died, also. Luke records “the rich man also died and was buried; And in hell he
lifted up his eyes, being in torments ... “(Luke 16: 22-23).
It is difficult on the wealthy because they so often do not sense a need of anything. If one
does not sense a need, he will not seek a fulfilment for the need and will fool himself into
complacency, will die in his sin and will be forever lost. All because he did not know or
accept that there are some things that money cannot buy. The very best thing in life,
eternal life is absolutely free. It is far better to have little of the goods of this world and be
rich in spiritual life and reality
Then, there was another rich man spoken of in the Bible, a prince in the land of Ur of the
Chaldees, named Abraham. God sent His message to Abraham and called him to follow
and obey God, forsake the lands he owned and go where God would lead him. he forsook
all to follow the Word of God. He became a much wealthier man because of his
obedience. That does not mean that God will give us great wealth if we follow and obey
Him. He may not. He usually does not, but if He does not, that does not mean that
faithfulness to God is unworthy. It is better to be wealthy in spirit which we cannot lose
than to wealthy in the things of this world and this life, which we cannot keep.
Abraham was still wealthy in financial terms but he was even wealthier in spiritual
reckoning. By his faith, God declared him righteous and by example, the father of all the
righteous, Jew or Gentile.
“Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
And the scripture, forseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached
before the gosple unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all the nations be blessed. So then
they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham” (Galatians 3: 7-9). He’s the
example, Who is the Object of our faith for spiritual wealth? Jesus Christ.
When we trust Jesus to save us from our sin, our spiritual poverty, He forgives us and
gives us the key to the city, heaven. Then “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the
law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a
tree,” the cross of our salvation! Why did He do it? “That the blessing of Abraham might
come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit
through faith” (Galatians 3: 13-14); the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the
promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to to them that believe.” ‘And if ye be
Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:22,
29).
You may not have much goods in this world but you can be rich, spiritually through Jesus
Christ.
