Am I too late to join the parade? (4 Replies) Corwin_The_Physicist - 06/25/1998 - 11:58:56 P

I agree with you, mab, it is kinda neat to see how people got their nicks.

For me, it's a long sordid tale of discovery, joy, pain, imposters, and usurpers (if that's a word).

When I first started coming to the boards around mid-November, I used a variety of nicks, because I couldn't find a real identity. One day I decided on picking a nick that was related to the show, but not too audacious as a main character.

I searched all the boards to see what was used and what wasn't, and I noticed that no one was using 'Corwin'. Corwin seemed appropriate for the type of persona I wanted: mainly in the background, but willing to pup up with bits of info or a humorous comment.

Being the good little lurker that I was (and since there was no nick registration) I wanted to ask the regulars if anyone had claimed the nick. So I posted a message in the Open Forum asking. All responses were in the negative, and I claimed 'Corwin' for myself.

For a long while I used that nick in peace .... putting in my comments and answering questions on astronomy and physics ... often times at length.

Then came the spat of imposters, but we had not control over them.

Next came another person who used 'Corwin', whose sole mantra was "WCW gets better ratings than B5!" I thought it was within etiquette to request that person choose a different nick, since it was confusing others thinking that *I* had posted that. This person refused stating something to the effect that "it's my birth name. Next you'll want me to change my driver's license!" (I swear, that's what he said!) So, instead of carrying on a hissy-fit, I appended to my name .... making it utterly unique and called myself "Corwin, The Physicist".

This way, people who had been at the boards awhile would recognize who I was, and who the other 'Corwin' was.

When the new registration system came up, I said "Goody! I get my old name back!" But then I thought of the uniqueness of "Corwin, The Physicist" and elected to keep it!

Well that's the long story! (WHEW!) As a side note, it wasn't until later conversations with Catseye into the meanings of names that I discovered my real first name means "Crown". So, "Corwin" is just an anagram of "I Crown"! Interesting eh?

Take care, and thanks for reading!

So you *didn't* name yourself after the guy in the Amber series? (nt) (0 Replies) Vir - 06/27/1998 - 09:48:35 P

    Ah! So *that* explains it! (0 Replies) GKarJunior - 06/26/1998 - 04:33:13 P

I remember the whole multiple-Corwin things too, then all of "you" disappeared, then when "Corwin the Physicist" showed up, I thought it was yet someone else.

    Duh!

OK, now I know ... the rest of the story.

It is very nice to see you again, Corwin the Physicist!

Yes, I remember the whole saga of the multiple posting Corwins... I think I was one of the first people hoodwinked by the imposter...he posted something to the effect of WCW getting better ratings than B5 and I responded, a little bewildered (it just didn't seem like the kind of comment you would make) but still thinking it was you!

Corwin the Physicist definitely has a unique sound and the parallel between it and the meaning of your real name is downright spooky!

I hope to see you around here more often! The VOS is missed!

And just where have you been hiding yourself, Mr. Physicist? (1 Reply) Blind Man - 06/26/1998 - 05:36:04 A

Just kidding, but it is nice to see you back. It's been gettin' kind of lonely around here with so many people disappearing...

    :) Blind Man

P.S. How's Catseye doing? Haven't seen her around for a while. And at the risk of sounding impertinent...have you two actually *met* each other yet? The suspense, man! It's killing us! :)

Hear, hear! Good to see both your names. I don't have enough hours in the day to sort through this new system. I finally get a bit of reading time and whoops! here comes my vacation. So I'm gone again, as fast as I get back. Hope you see your postings when I crawl out from under the pile of work I'm going to find two weeks down the road.
