      Lanncelot1700 14-Jan-2000

        My Nick? ...
I chose my nick not for the romantic overtone it has relating to arthurian sagas, but to the evil and lacking in my own soul. Lancelot fell a long away and in life it feels I follow that spiral while battling to save my tattered honor.   I chose 1700 for two reasons: it was the age of enlightenment and it was the number of the USS Starship on Startrek, the first Enterprise-type ship.

      Laundrette4214-Jan-2000

Laundrette42 is a combination of two things. First, Laundrette is from my favourite movie ever, My Beautiful Laundrette (directed by Stephen Frears). This movie had a big influence on my life. The number 42 is, of course, from Douglass Adams' inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy. Samwise is a name from Tolkien, of course, the name of Samwise Gamgee, a hobbit and Frodo's faithful companion. Despite how nerdy this may sound, I really connect with Sam. We two are very alike, personality wise. I love him dearly. Even if he doesn't exist, every so often he gives me insight into myself.

      Lost C'Mell 10 Feb 2000

        Hi Pat,

What a good idea for a site - it's a subject of endless fascination to me as well...and I love having people ask me where my name comes from, because it gives me a chance to do one of the things I love best - spout on about my favourite authors :)

Firstly, I'm a guy with a female name...this came about while playing Diablo as a rogue (female amazon type character). I wanted a heroic name for my char, and this one certainly is...

Lost C'Mell, or Cat Melanie, is a character in a story by Cordwainer Smith, surely one of the most unsung geniuses of science fiction. She is an evolved cat from a world where animals have been bred as a race of underpeople, slaves who have absolutely no rights at all; they are killed if they are ill, or disobedient, or do anything wrong at all. Together with a rogue nobleman, Lord Jestocost, she is instrumental in changing the status quo and getting underpeople recognition as living creatures with basic rights. As you can see, it's a worthy name to take, and I'm pleased to have claimed it in icq as well...

my pet hate is having to guess who around me is a friend with a name I've not seen before...lol...

          So now you know!!

        Keep up the good work,

        Lost C'Mell

      Lottelita 17-Aug-00

My first online nick was Novalen. It came from the combination of two characters from the Orson Scott Card "Ender" series: Novinha and Valentine. These women were both very strong, and very important to Ender, the books' protagonist, but they were also quite different, and I thought of myself as having a little bit in common with each of them, so I combined their names to form my online identity.

My current nick is also a combination, but not one I created. Lottelita comes from Nabokov's sensational book "Lolita": at one point, when Humbert Humbert is involved with Lo's mother Charlotte, he imagines the mother and daughter combined, and names this figment "Lottelita, or Lolitchen." Again, I found my personality a combination of Charlotte and Lolita, so this nick was fitting.

      Lunara Dragoon 3-2-01

I love the mysteries of the moon; her magic fills my heart. I also am enamored of the myths of dragons, and the fantasy of the dragon fighter, the dragoon. So I took our moon's name, Luna, and enchanced it and added the dragon fighter for the strength which (guestbook cut off entry)

      Luthien Hecate Fett 09/22/00

It started out as Lady Fett, because of my longtime interest in Boba Fett. Then the name morphed. It became Lady Luthien Hecate Fett. "Luthien"'s from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. It's the name of an elfmaid (whose mother was a Maia, I might add) Luthien fell in love with a mortal man named Beren...

"Hecate" is from the Greek goddess Hecate. I've always had a fascination for Hecate, and the combination of Luthien and Hecate sounded right. It's the name most people online know me by, and the one I feel most comfortable with.
