Hi, Patient Gardener. :) I like your nickname, BTW, it's very calming. I don't use a nickname, I just go by my name. I usually do. I've never really felt the need to pretend to be somebody else or hide behind a nickname, so I just use my own name. I've never really seen any reason why not to. Not on messageboards, anyway. Besides, I've never been able to think of a nickname that I liked well enough to take on as my "online identity."
Except in chatrooms. I don't go to chat rooms often, but when I do, I'm "Rainy Day Woman #12." ;-) Why? I hear you ask...It's a Bob Dylan song. It's not my favorite Bob Dylan song, but it's one of the only ones he did where the title takes on a gender. :-)
Welcome to the board, Patient Gardener, I hope you decide to come back and hang around with us. We can be fun, honestly we can!! :)

I chose Ragdoll because it is one of my favorite songs (by Aerosmith). And the 13 is my favorite number.
Well, my nickname obviously isn't my real name.

Luke and Raven
I love Star Wars, and my real name is Raven, so I just extended it a bit. My husband's name is Luke, and he has the nick jedimaster_luke_tasker, and our son's nick is jedichild_dae_tasker, his real name being Dae. We all tend to stick to using our own names as nicks, just adding something Jedi to the front. Our daughter Brady does not yet have a nick, despite being Dae's twin, as she deeply dislikes the computer, calling it evil!

Tallahassee Soap Shoes
Way back in the BBS days, I started as Don Maxx (the ninja turtle Donatello + Maxx from a middle school magazine we made.) Later I changed to The Omniscience because it was the longest name the board allowed. When I got on the real internet I picked the name Charon after the River Styx boatman (before Pluto's moon of the same name). After a particularly depressing November, I wanted a new online persona and picked Reo off an object I'd created on a MUSH, TinyTIM, which originally stood for Random Exploring Object. I just liked the sound, plus after typing your nick countless times you end up wanting something short and sweet.

I use Rocklady a lot because I'm a geologist. It's not very original, but it works in a pinch. My other is a little more interesting. Sweetncute...no, I'm not stuck up/conceited/etc... a driller I was working with came up with it. He asked me what my "handle" was and when I wouldn't tell him (he was weird), he guessed. I liked it, it stuck.

I like rock music and I'm a total babe, so that's how I got ROCKRbabe. ROCKR is spelled different cuz I'm unique. Eight (8) is my fave number and I liked putting 08 at the end of my sn's...so that's my sn history!

My identity came from my IRL nickname Cat and the fact I'm the rogue of the family, a bit of the black sheep. There was never any doubt at what my online name would be...
