RE: The Naming of Things... (2 Replies) North Star - 06/24/1998 - 06:16:45 P

Mine comes from the star that is in the Big Dipper, and that group of stars, if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, is all ways around no matter what time of year you look. I also thought of using Polaris, the real name of the star, but that sounds like a male name.

Regards,

North Star of the city

:-) happy to tell how I got my name

Don't take this wrong, but... (3 Replies) Gandalf - 06/25/1998 - 09:45:00 A

Wherever I have been, I am back.

Last I checked, the Pole Star (Polaris) was located at the end of the Ursa Minor's tail (the LITTLE Dipper), not Ursa Major (the Big Dipper). Did the Universe decide to rearrange itself without telling me??? How dare it!!! =)

And since Tolkien is one of my favorite authors, my handle is in homage to his great story. It also relays an enigmatic quality which I have been said to have.

Wherever I am going, I will return.

Gandalf

I just moved out of Toronto to a small town called Orillia and here you can actually see Ursa Minor with the naked eye (and its still has Polaris on its tail).

You also share your name with a Blue Point Siamese Grand Premier named Ambracia Gandalf the Grey. I had been waiting years to have a cat good enough to give that name. Most incredibly he made his grand in 2 shows.

...but I'm pretty sure Polaris can still be seen in Ursa Minor!

My Dad has a cat named Gandalf who is also rather enigmatic : )

Excellent name after an excellent character. Tolkien rocks.

Polaris is actually a beautiful name for a woman, I think. There is an X-men character of that name who has the power of magnetism.

Thanks for replying, NS!
