Imagine my surprise when after doing a search on Martin Van Buren Bates (an ancestor of mine), I find this site that may even link my families together in more than one way. My mother is the daughter of Willie Bates and Ramie Bates. Both of whom are now deceased. My father's father was Leonard Harmon Adkins. All of whom were born in Ky. I'm hoping to get some feedback on anyway you may know of on how exactly I am linked to Martin Van Buren Bates and any other bloodlines I might have. I would just like to know where I come from. Martin Van Buren Bates is my great,great,great uncle. Martin H. Shaw from Cherry Lane, N.C. was my grandfather and named after Martin Van Buren. My brother and his son carry on the Martin name even today. Martin Van Buren Bates was the brother to my grea , great, great grandmother. I just thought it would be great to connect with distant relatives. P.S. - I work for the State Historic Preservation Office in Maryland and have visited the site of the Point Look Out prison where Martin V.B.Bates was held f r a time during the civil war. My g-g-g grandmother was Lucille Anderson who married John Fontaine Warrix in Letcher County in 1862 and who then moved to Floyd Co. I think that her mother was a Bates. An Aaron Anderson was a witness on her marriage license. Any help with these peopl will be appreciated.

I found the following articles in my searches through the old Kentucky newspapers. Couldn't find your email link, so I just put it hear. The Big Sandy Herald March 11, 1873 "Last week we had the pleasure of shaking hands with the "tallest of the tallest" of Kentucky's sons--we refer to Captain Martin Van Buren Bates, late of the C. S. A.--who stands seven feet seven inches in his socks and pulls down four hundred and ten pou ds. The Captain is on his way up Sandy, to pay a visit to his relatives, after an absence of six years, most of the time has been spent in Europe. Since we last had the pleasure of meeting him, he has visited England, France, Austria, Spain, Prussia, Denmark, etc. and can truthfully say more than most of men, outside of our State, that he has had audience with all the crowned heads of Europe. Her M jesty, Queen of England, presented him a most magnificent gold watch and massive chain attached, which we think is the finest rig, besides the largest watch, in America.. To judge from the beautiful diamond pin in his breast and the diamond rings on his f ngers, they must have cost about $3,000. Captain Bates was born in Letcher County, near Whitesburg, November 9, 1839 and is the youngest child among twelve children. While in Europe he married Miss Ann H. Swan of Nova Scotia, a lady just one inch taller than himself. They were married in the c ty of London at St. Martins, one of the oldest churches of England. Since his return to the United States, he has invested his money in Government Bonds and settle down in a quiet way on a beautiful farm near Cleveland, Ohio. My mother (Flossie Versal) was a Bates. Her father was Robert Bates. His father was William Ben Bates (I believe he is Benjamin Emmett Bates who married Margaret Lucas). His father is Jesse Bates (brother to Martin Van Buren Bates). His father is John Wal is Bates.

I often wonder if there is a connection..It is difficult to do research from here in Wa.
