Lloyd and his wife lived off of Thrift Road (now Freedom Drive) in the Paw Creek community of North Carolina, near his brother Oscar. They had a tiny store on Thrift Road. Members of the family would gather at his house to play cards. His wife Chloe returned to her home in Georgia or South Carolina after his death.

Obituary from "The Charlotte Observer," Thursday, October 1, 1953:
Lloyd A. Joy Dies At Home In Paw Creek
Lloyd Alfonzo Joy, 66, died yesterday at his home in Paw Creek after an illness of two years. Funeral services will be at Hankins-Whittington chapel Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock with the Rev. F. S. Johnston, pastor of Paw Creek Presbyterian, and the Rev. Charles P. Auten of Thrift Baptist Churches officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Joy was born in Gaston County Nov. 28, 1887, the son of the late Sidney A. and Emma Abernathy Joy. He attended county schools and had made his home in Charlotte since 1919. He was a retired brick mason and at the time of death operated a store and service station on Rozzelle's Ferry Rd.
Survivors are the wife, the former Cora Flowe Tincher of Huntington, W. Va., whom he married Sept. 16, 1912; two sisters, Mrs. Lexie Fisher of Charlotte and Mrs. Mattie Abernathy of Belmont; and a brother, O. F. Joy of Paw Creek.
Nephews who will be pallbearers are O. F. Joy, Jr., J. F. Joy, J. M. Joy, D. E. Joy, C. M. Joy, G. A. Fisher.
