Notes for James Alexander Joy

The census of 1880 states that the father of James Joy was born in South Carolina, and the mother in North Carolina.

In the 1920 Census Schedule, the location of birth of the father of Thomas Joy son of James Alexander Joy is given as South Carolina, and the location of birth of his mother is given as North Carolina.

In 1880 - James A. Joy was head of a household that included his wife, seven of his unmarried children ages 2 months to twenty years, his father-in-law, one married son, daughter-in-law and grandchild, and a boarder who was the mother of his daughter-in-law. The men were farmers, although they indicated on the census that they had been out of work for much of the year.

Epitaph on his marker in Goshen Grove Cemetery, Gaston Co., NC reads as follows:
"Farewell my wife and children all. From you a father Christ doth call."

The record of accounts for Dr. Thomas Henderson lists Thomas R. Joy of Lincoln County who owes $2.50 for medical treatment, that cannot be collected. The records are dated 1816-1820. This from the Henderson estate, CR.065.508.60. North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, Vol XIX No 4, 1993.
