Notes for Robert William Joy

The family of "William R. Joy" of River Bend Township of Gaston Co., NC appears in pages that survived the fire that destroyed most of the 11th (1890) Census.

They lived near the home place of John Butch Rankin in Hickory Grove, Gaston County, North Carolina. When Margaret Rankin Moody died, Rebecca and Will Joy inherited the John Rankin home place.

The family plot of Robert William Joy contains the graves of Rebecca Moody Joy; James Erastus and Flossie Rhyne Joy; Ruby Joy, who was the first to be buried in the plot; Aleese Joy, Jesse Joy, Juanita Joy and Marvin Joy. The plot is adjacent to the family plot of Jacob Rhyne, father of Flossie Rhyne Joy.

Will made caskets and prepared bodies for burial in his community. He was also an excellent cabinet maker. He played a musical instrument in a band, and a granddaughter believes that it was the banjo.
