Notes for Edward James Poteat

His Mecklenburg County, NC Certificate of Death incorrectly gives his name as Edward Jones Poteat. His mother and father were not listed. Mrs. Ethel Poteat Williams was the informant.

E. J. POTEAT'S FUNERAL TODAY
FUNERAL FOR RETIRED TEXTILE WORKER WILL BE HELD AT MCEWEN CHAPEL AT 2 P.M.
Funeral services for Edward James Poteat, 77, retired textile worker, who died Friday in a local hospital after an illness of a month, will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the McEwen chapel on East Morehead Street.
He was a member of the Huntersville Presbyterian church assisted born January 7, 1873. (sic)
Officiating at the services will be Rev. C. H. Rowan of Walkersville Presbyterian church assisted by Rev. H. L. Blackwelder of Homestead Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Lucius Love, Eugene Love, P. M. Poteat, Gene (sic) Joy, Alex Cox, Evans Cox.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Mary Orr Poteat; two daughters, Mrs. F. A. Love, and Mrs. R. W. Williams; five sons, Preston Monroe Poteat of Tyler, Texas, Lucius Orr Poteat of Black Mountain, Avery Miller Poteat of the U. S. Army, Washington, D.C.; one brother, George Poteat; 11 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
The body was taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. R. W. Williams, Oakdale road, yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock.

Florine Love Joy remembers that her grandfather Ed Poteat was in Tyler, Texas visiting his son Preston when he fell gravely ill. Preston hired an ambulance to take his father back to Charlotte, and a nurse to accompany him on the trip. Ed Poteat died at Mercy Hospital a short time after reaching Charlotte.

His death certificate gives his place of birth as Mecklenburg County, NC; personal recollection of family members is that he was actually born in Burke County, and returned there often to visit relatives.
