W. Thompson was wounded at Gettysburg and died at Elmire Hospital in New
York.

Date of death is given as May 10, 1885 by W. N. Watt in "The Heritage of
Alexander County, North Carolina - Volume 1, 1986", published by the
Alexander County Genealogical Society in cooperation with The History
Division of Hunter Publishing Co., Winston-Salem, NC. This date is
probably a typing error.
