Notes for James Patterson

James served in the Revolutionary War. His widow applied for a pension, but was denied because she couldn't remember his commanding officers or James' dates to tours. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4900, Date of Import: Aug 8, 1996]

"There is a tradition handed down by Mr. Gates Linney, a close friend to the Patterson family, that a Patterson was plowing his corn field late one afternoon near Hawkin's Branch when a recruiter from George Washington's Army came by recruiting "Mountain Men" from North Carolina and Tennessee to go help fight the battle of King's Mountain. Upon asking James, he replied, "I ain't got no bullets." He was told that they were going to mound bullets that night at High Shoals. With this, James hollered, 'Ma, bring me my rifle and my saddle,' left his plow and harness in the field and went to war." [by Frank C. James probably had other children who are not found in available records, as the census records for various decades list a James Patterson with what would appear to be several children in the household. There is a tradition that James had a son who died as a result of a fall while building himself a house.
