Notes for Ira Patterson

"Ira and Lucretia Jane moved to Alabama, living briefly in Sumter Co., moving then to Marengo Co., near Demopolis. Ira was joined by his youngest brother, Thomas Thompson Patterson."
"Ira was a member of the Demopolis Masonic Lodge, and in 1839 one of the nine founding members of the Presbyterian Church of Demopolis. While taking his son, Rice Theodore, to Tuscaloosa, Ala. where he was a student at the University of Alabama, Ira was drenched crossing a swollen creek. Arriving in Tuscaloosa, Ira went to the home of a friend, Dr. John Branham Read, where he died of pneumonia May 3, 1863. His body was returned home, and he was buried in the family cemetery of his friend and neighbor Thomas Alphonso Sharpe, also from Iredell County. Lucretia Jane survived her husband by 40 years, dying December 20, 1903. She is buried beside Ira. The births of their 8 children, all born in Marengo, are recorded in the family Bible, now in possession of James Lawson Patterson, Jr. of Demopolis." [by Mary W. Steffens, using military service records, cemetery records, and county records and Patterson family Bible as sources, and published in "The Heritage of Alexander County, North Carolina - Volume 1, 1986", published by the Alexander County Genealogical Society in cooperation with The History Division of Hunter Publishing Co., Winston-Salem, NC]

Ira and Mira were twins. Ira died in 1863. He was taking his son to the University of Alabama when they were drenched by a storm. He died not long after of pneumonia. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4900, Date of Import: Aug 8, 1996]
