Notes for Benjamin Franklin Patterson

Benjamin and Sarah were living in Alexander County when a severe and persistent drought occurred in the early 1880's. On a trip to Watauga County to buy cabbage, Ben Patterson was struck by the contrast of the lush crops in the mountains and the parched landscape of the Piedmont.
In 1881, he moved his wife and first child Millian, to a farm on Beech Mountain near Valle Crucis. There the rest of his six children were born.
He moved his family back to Alexander County, to land on Sulphur Springs, or Wallace Creek, near Hiddenite. Benjamin and Sarah lived there the rest of their lives. Ben Patterson died December 1, 1922. After his death Sarah Jane provided a summer home for visitors to the Sulphur Springs near her home. The springs were then widely known for their healthful qualities.
