Notes for Eleasaph Patterson

Eleasaph grew up near Hiddenite where his father owned 1,035 acres. He helped his father in blacksmithing. He also helped his father build the Virgin Springs Church. All seven of his sons were in the Civil War. Two died, as well as a son-in-law, R. F. Smith. The others were wounded. Eleasaph was christened at Virgin Springs, Alexander Co., NC. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4900, Date of Import: Aug 8, 1996]

"Eleasaph, Asaph or Elephas (spelling differs on records) was the third child of the twelve children of John and Ann Thompson Patterson. He was born March 19, 1792 and believed to have been born near Rocky Face Mountain in present Alexander County.
"Eleasaph or Asaph is a Biblical name. Asaph was the leader of David's Choir and wrote twelve psalms. His older brother was Adoniram and another brother Adonijah were also given Biblical names.
"Sometime in 1793 John Patterson bought a tract of land on County Road no. 1615 between Liberty Church and Hiddenite. He bought several other tracts until the total land was 1035 acres. Some of the land was across Highway 90 from Broyhill Furniture Co. to the pond near Hiddenite. It was here that Eleasaph grew up. His father was a blacksmith and he probably helped his father in this work.
"In 1824 an A. R. P. church was formed and located on Bull Branch near Broyhill Furniture Co. There was a spring near the church on John Patterson's land flowing from a rock. John Patterson named the church the Virgin Springs Church.
"John Patterson's 1035 acres was divided among his children. Eleasaph received 100 acres on March 25, 1833. This land was located near Martin's store, County Road #1610. It was here that Eleasaph died about 1872. He was about 80 years old. It is not known where he is buried." [by W. N.
