Notes for Carian Hablock Rector

"Richard's wife Cary was a Cherokee Indian." [by James H. Sharpe, Jr. of Hiddenite, NC - his sources are family members, census records and Ralph Shearer Rowland & Star Wilson Rowland, Clary Genealogy - Four Early American Lines and Related Families.]

A source gives her name as Katherine, which appears with certainty to be incorrect. Other spellings of her given name are Cary Ann, Cerrian or Kerrian, Cariann, Carion, Caryan, Carrie, and Cary. Most certainly, her name was written as it sounded to the writer. Later spellings of the names of granddaughters who were named after her are similarly various. Her middle name has been written in various spellings, as well; but the spelling "Hablock" is from the Mary Clary Bible, according to Mark Lackey, who has seen the original writing.

Listed in the 1840 census on the same page as "Caryan" Clary is Benj'n Recktor, age 80-90. Also listed in the household is a white male under five years of age (Cary's son John?), A white female age 15-20, and a white female age 60-70.
