John moved to North Carolina before the Revolutionary War with his family and lived in Rowan County near Rocky Face Mountain (now in Alexander County.) At age 21, he joined General Gate's army in 1780 as a private during the Revolutionary War. He was in the Battle of Camden, South Carolina, where he was wounded and taken prisoner (August 1780). His pension records say that after he was released, he had great difficulty getting home -- 150 miles away. Tradition has it that a Patterson woman rode out to bring him home. This woman could not have been a wife, since he was not married at the time, but is believed to have been his mother.
On 19 October 1782, John patented 350 acres on the South Yadkin River. He also received a $48 pension per year for his war injuries.
Ultimately, John owned 1,035 acres in Rowan County (now Alexander County,) which he divided among his children in his will. On 14 February 1778, he made a court entry for land -- 400 acres near Rocky Face Mountain. [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4900, Date of Import: Aug 8, 1996]

"John Patterson was the owner of 1035 acres of land in present Alexander County. The land was located between Taylorsville and Hiddenite on both sides of N.C. Highway 90, including the present Broyhill Furniture Company and to the pond on Adams Gem Farm. The southern boundary was almost to Liberty Church." [by W. N. Watt, using family records, pension, deeds and marriage records as sources, and published in "The Heritage of Alexander County, North Carolina - Volume 1, 1986", published by the Alexander County Genealogical Society in cooperation with The History Division of Hunter Publishing Co., Winston-Salem, NC]
