Notes for Henry Patterson

"Henry Patterson was the progenitor of some of the Pattersons now living in Alexander and Iredell Counties. The place and date of this birth is not known but he was probably born 1730-1735 in Pennsylvania or Ireland. Henry Patterson's wife was Elizabeth (?) and she was born in Armagh County, Ireland in 1735 and died in Iredell County, NC in 1815. The date of their marriage is believed to be about 1757 in Pennsylvania as the pension record of their oldest son, John Patterson, states he was born December 30, 1758 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
The date of arrival of this family to North Carolina was probably around 1774. The Rowan County tax list in 1778 shows Henry Patterson and two land entries of 1778 for land grants on the South Yadkin River near Rocky Face Mountain revealing Henry Patterson was an early settler. His neighbors were Walter Sharpe and William Cowan. Henry Patterson is the only man found in the search of the Revolutionary War records who gave his life during the war from the present Alexander County. His home was in Rowan County at the time. A marker erected in the Carson Chapel Cemetery, near Taylorsville, NC to the memory of his father and mother by John Patterson, states Henry Patterson died in October, 1781 in General Green's Camp on the hills of the Santee, SC. It is not known if Henry Patterson died from wounds of battle or from fever, or why he was in Revolutionary War since he probably was 50 years old. The administrators of his estate, shown in Rowan County Court Minutes were John and Elizabeth Patterson, his wife and son.
The estate papers reveal Henry Patterson was an blacksmith and twenty-one pounds was due the estate for work not collected. Listed in the estate papers were 25 head of cattle, 12 sheep, 14 hogs, various tools, household furniture, etc. At the bottom of the estate paper was listed two cows, two calves, one chest, one spinning wheel, some dresser furniture and one bed in possession of Samuel Sloan. Samuel Sloan having this property would seem to indicate he was a son-in-law, but nothing has been found to connect Samuel Sloan to the Patterson family. Samuel Sloan was on an 1800 Iredell County Tax list with 246 acres of land.
The children of Henry and Elizabeth Patterson were two sons, John and James. They took out the land grand in 1782 on Henry Patterson's 350 acre entry of 1778. The daughters are not known except Ellie. She married Robert Carson in Rowan County on December 20, 1782 and the bondsmen were Robert Carson and James Patterson.
Elizabeth Patterson the widow of Henry Patterson married Robert Carson, Sr. on November 25, 1785. The bondsman was Robert Templeton." [by W. N. Watt, using family history, pension records, tax lists, and marriage bond records as sources, and published in "The Heritage of Alexander County, North Carolina - Volume 1, 1986", published by the Alexander County Genealogical Society in cooperation with The History Division of Hunter Publishing Co., Winston-Salem, NC]

Researcher Deborah Patterson gives Henry Patterson's year of birth as 1731.

Note: Rocky Face Mountain is located about 5 miles northeast of Taylorsville; about 8 miles north north west of Stony Point; and 4 miles west of Love Valley.
