Notes for Alfred Hoover

Obituary from "The Charlotte Daily Observer," September 10, 1898:

ALMOST A CENTENARIAN

Mr. Alfred Hoover Dies at the Age of 91 Years - Funeral Today

Mr. Alfred Hoover, one of the oldest citizens of this county, passed away last night at 8:30 o'clock, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Thos. M. Shaw, on East Fifth Street.
Mr. Hoover was born at Paw Creek, January 1, 1807, and was therefore 91 years old. He lived in Paw Creek Township all of his life, until last fall, when he came to Charlotte to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Shaw. Mr. Hoover enjoyed remarkable health. He was hale, hearty and robust until a year or two ago, when he began to show signs of failing. He was ill, however, only three or four days. He had no special malady, but after the first break in the thread of life, it did not take the machine long to run down. Mr. Hoover was one of the best and most influential men in the county. He was very much esteemed, and in his day and time was one of the most active men in his township. His wife died twelve years ago. The children who survive him are: Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. W. C. Neal, Messrs. T. H., John S., James and Andy Hoover, all of this county.
The funeral procession will leave Mr. Shaw's at 11 o'clock this morning for Paw Creek church, of which deceased was a member. The service will be conducted there at 1 o'clock by Rev. Mr. Shaw, pastor of the church.
