Notes for Jane Hoover

"There has been more sickness here this fall and latter part of the summer than has ever been known in one season, but not a great many deaths for the quantity of sickness. John S. Love and Moses Love both of them lost their wives this summer and fall." [from a letter written by Nancy Johnston Lawing Scott to her children from her first marriage to John Lawing, written in Mecklenburg County, NC on November 28, 1846. From Karen Oliver-Paull]

Note: Nancy Scott was enumerated before Moses Kistler and his wife Jane T. Love in 1860.

When Jane Hoover died in 1846, her four children became heirs of the estates of her father, Col. Henry M. Hoover, and her uncle, Thomas B. Hoover. Henry Hoover died in 1850 in Mecklenburg County, and his will stipulated legacies to the children of his deceased daughter Jane Love. Thomas Hoover died a wealthy planter in Mississippi, and he left a large bequest to each of his siblings and their children. Because the legacies of the children of Jane Love were significant, their father, John S. Love, was required to post bond to become their guardian and to administer the estates of his children. These papers are found in the estate of John S. Love who died in 1872.
