Notes for Adoniram Patterson

"Adoniram's wife Elizabeth was the daughter of a doctor. She knew a great deal about medicine. Many of the local people would come to her for cures. This couple lived on a plantation on the South Yadkin River. In 1860, they had hundreds of acres and 9 slaves. They had 11 children." [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4900, Date of Import: Aug 8, 1996]

"Adoniram Patterson, oldest child of John Patterson and Ann Thompson was born in Rowan County, later Iredell County, later Alexander County, May 13, 1788. He died August 4, 1864. Adoriram Patterson married Elizabeth Norton about 1823. Elizabeth Norton was a daughter of Nicholas Norton, a Methodist minister and farmer, who lived near Stony Point. She was born on May 4, 1803 and died November 26, 1898 at the age of 95. The couple were buried in the Hiddenite Cemetery.
Adorinam Patterson's homestead was on the Cheatham Ford Road at the South Yadkin River. He had several hundred acres of land and nine slaves in 1860." [by W. N. Watt, using family history as source, and published in "The Heritage of Alexander County, North Carolina - Volume 1, 1986", published by the Alexander County Genealogical Society in cooperation with The History Division of Hunter Publishing Co., Winston-Salem, NC]

According to Katherine B. Alexander -- a descendant of Adoniram Patterson -- Adoniram owned nine hundred acres of land and nine slaves. Nicholas Norton, father of Elizabeth Norton Patterson, is described as a doctor, not a minister. This account can also be found in the above mentioned book, as well in other histories of Alexander County. It appears likely that the father of Elizabeth was in fact a doctor, while a brother also named Nicholas was a minister.

In the 1860 Federal census, Prude and Sallie Johnson, the twin daughters of daughter Laura Patterson Johnson, are enumerated with Adoniram Patterson. Also enumerated with Adoniram Patterson was M. A. Long, age 27, female, a tailor, who may have been a daughter of Malinda (Matilda?) Patterson Long, sister of Adoniram.
