Notes for Cunningham Miller Orr, Sr.

Cunningham enlisted at age 17 on March 11, 1862. He was wounded in the left shoulder at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania between July 1 and July 3, 1863. He returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. He was paroled at Burkeville, Virginia, on April 14, 1865.

In the Mecklenburg census of 1870, Cunningham Miller Orr lived with Susan C. Miller. He was listed as the nephew of Susan C. Miller, who was the head of the house. When he married, Cunningham Orr and his family continued to live with Susan Miller.
Susan Miller was probably married to Andrew C. Miller, who was born June 10, 1810 and died Feb. 10, 1865. He is buried at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church. In 1860, A. C. and Susan Miller appear in the Mecklenburg census as family #863. Family #864 was headed by Margaret Miller, widow age 83, Elizabeth Miller age 40, and Margaret Elwood, age 18.
Also in the 1860 census, John G. and Leah Monteith Orr were family #865. John was a brother of Cunningham, and would also have been a nephew of Susan Miller. Family #862 was headed by Martha Monteith, widow age 60, and included Maria Monteith, who would marry James L. V. Orr, another brother. Maria and Leah Monteith were sisters.
Miss Elizabeth Miller is buried close by Andrew Miller at Sugaw Creek. She was born on Oct. 18, 1815 and died March 30, 1872.
Margaret A. Ellwood is buried beside Elizabeth. She was born on Sept. 17, 1833 or 38 and died Dec. 30, 1869.
It is not known by the researcher at this time whether Susan C. Miller was the sister of Mary Flavilla Alexander, but that is what I suspect. I have not found a marriage bond for Andrew Miller and Susan Alexander.
