Notes for James Orr

Before coming to North Carolina, James Orr lived in Pennsylvania and was a weaver by trade. [See Mecklenburg County Deed Book 5:305)

James Orr was a private in Captain Charles Polk's Mecklenburg County Militia Company during the American Revolutionary War. [Ronald M. Lemmond, research, (1 May 1998)]

James Orr was listed in the tax lists in Captain Hood's Company of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in 1797, 1798, 1799, 1806 and 1807. [Ronald M. Lemmond, research, (1 May 1998)]

Mecklenburg County, NC Deed Book 13, pp 916. 15 Apr 1783. James Orr and wf Jane (X) to William Blair, for Ł300 current NC money, 140 A in 5 separate surveys viz: (1-3) 55 A in three parcels, the first on Goose Cr., the second adj. the first, and the third on Crooked Cr. Sd parcels were granted by Gov. Abner Nash to Joseph Galbreath 25 Mar 1772, then deeded to Thomas Polk 13 Mar 1775. (4) 13 A on Goose Cr adj the parcels on that stream listed under (1). (5) 72 A also on Goose Cr. Wit: James Wilson and Wm. Polk. Ack in Jul 1791 Ct by Orr. Isaac Alexander, CMC. [Herman W. There was more than one James Orr living in Goose Creek township, and several in Mecklenburg County. James Orr and wife Margaret are buried at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, and are not the same couple as James Orr and wife Margaret Jane Lemmond who lived in the same area. In order to differentiate between three James Orrs living in the same area, the tax rolls named James Orr husband of Jane Lemmond as James "Whistling" Orr. Also listed were James "Jockey" Orr and James Orr "Heretic." The following land transactions refer to more than one James Orr.
