Obituary: Thomas B. Howell Sr.
AMHERST -- Thomas B. Howell Sr., 66, prominent businessman, died Thursday, May 15, 1997 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Robbie Mantiply Howell.
Born Feb. 1, 1931 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late John Vincent and Louise Borum Howell Sr. formerly of Athlone. He began his business career in a small country store on Rt. 29 and later moved into downtown Amherst. He and his lifelong friend, I. Paul Wailes III and their close business
associate Rex A. Pixley founded and developed the Ambriar Shopping Center. He was a strong family man, dedicated to his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved his home in Amherst County where he had lived all of his life. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Thomas B. Howell Jr. and wife, Terri of Lynchburg; one daughter, Beth Howell Brown and husband, Rob of Yorktown; two sisters, Alice Howell Powell and husband, Dick of Raleigh, N.C., Margaret Howell Perry and husband, Milton of Chesapeake; one brother, Robert William Howell and wife, Libby of Amherst; one sister-in-law, Betty C. Howell of Amherst; one aunt, Emily B. Anderson of Richmond; two grandchildren, Ryan Wilkerson of Yorktown and Chelsea Howell of Lynchburg.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Louise Howell Johnson and one brother, John V. Howell Jr.
Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Amherst Cemetery with the Rev. Rob Edwards and Dr. Michael R. Fitzgerald officiating.
The family will receive friends at the residence on Kenmore Road at anytime. There will be no visitation or viewing at Driskill Funeral Chapel.
The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Amherst Rescue Squad, the Amherst Fire Department or a charity of your choice.
