BELMONT - Mrs. Mattie J. Abernethy, 71, died Sunday in a local hospital.
Funeral 3 P.M. today at First Baptist Church.
Survivors: daughters, Mrs. H. B. White, Jr. of Houston, Tex., Mrs.
C. Oland Barr of Belmont, Mrs. Robert Capps of Shelby; sister, Mrs. Lexie
Fisher of Charlotte.

Obituary from "The Gastonia Gazette," Monday, December 22, 1969:

MRS. MATTIE J. ABERNATHY
BELMONT - Mrs. Mattie J. Abernathy, 71, of 6 Elizabeth Street, died at
2:55 A.M. Sunday in a Charlotte hospital.
Born Dec. 11, 1898 in Gaston County, she was the daughter of the
late Sidney A. and Emma Abernathy Joy.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. H. B. White, Jr. of Houston,
Tex., and Mrs. C. Oland Barr of Belmont, and Mrs. Robert Capps of Shelby;
one sister, Mrs. Lexie Fisher of Charlote; five grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 3 P.M. today in the First Baptist Church
with Dr. Walter N. Long, pastor, and the Rev. C. B. Barr Jr.
officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Baptist Cemetery.
The body will remain at Bumgardner's Funeral Home and will lie in
state at the church one hour prior to the service.
