Most butterflies and moths are active in this season. They start laying eggs on host plants.

Hi Peter,

I always have trouble getting photos of butterflies, especially the monarchs. Any tips on getting photos?

By the way, I love you site. It has helped me identify many of the insects I've got on film. Thank you. :) I hope to do something similar some day, but include all animals I take photos of. Feel free to check out my photoblog though, there are a couple of insects in there, though I have yet to add a lot.

I have a great photo of a pair of Bee Moths mating. They are brilliantly colored red blue and black. If you are interested in copy of pic for your research, please return email.

I came to your blog through a search for case moths. We are very familiar with them and today my son found a case moth with a case of 21cm long with a tiny tall of 4 cm added to that. I have never seen such a long one and could hardly believe that it was a case moth, until we saw it crawling out and move around. The diameter of the caterpillar is 12mm. Is it usual that they become so big? It is so beautiful to look at! The case is very beautiful as well. We would like to keep it for a while and see what happens. Are there any specific leaves they like?
