Forty motivated girls who live in Nouadhibou, the second largest Mauritanian city in habitants (est. 110,000 people), practiced for two months on the newly renovated basketball court. Four teams composed of 10 girls each, played in a 2 day tournament on June 20th and 21st.
The training each weekend and the tournament itself gave the girls the opportunity to show the community that they are not inferior to boys, at the same time expanding on gender development in the region, while working out and having fun. The only high school in this region has not had a physical education program for the past two years.
With the help of Nouadhibou Regional Basketball league, and the director of Youth and Sports who donated chairs, the tournament was held with great success. The DJ’s added a nice touch by rousing up the crowd with play-by-play coverage, and spinning tunes during warm-ups and stoppage of play.
This project consisted of renovating the basketball court by re-cementing, painting and making new nets for the baskets. Each girl who participated received a certificate of participation along with a tee-shirt. The Girls Mentoring Center (GMC) has kept the basketballs, uniforms, whistles, pump and stopwatch bought for this project, so that in the coming years the basketball tournament will continue to be a part of the GMC activities.
