Continuing Education Workshop
N'Beika, Gnimlane

The objective of the Continuing Education Conference was to reach out to young college-aged girls in two villages in the Tagant region and discuss the importance of education and goal-setting. PCV Laura D. conceptualized, planned and organized the workshop and over fifty girls participated including many girls who had already quit their studies.

The two-day conference began with a discussion facilitated by three local professional women. Each woman described the importance of education in her life and also discussed how she overcame various obstacles that face many Mauritanian women. The girls were encouraged to ask questions and the discussion ranged from early marriage to health related topics. We spent the rest of the day defining role models, discussing their importance, and then each girl wrote a paragraph about her own role model.

The second day focused on decision making and goal setting. The girls acted out skits on how to deal with difficult situations. They did a group activity on the affect of perspective on goal-setting.

The workshop finished with a creative exercise in which each girl designed and presented a book of future goals. The girls enjoyed the workshop and wanted to continue it the following weekend. These types of activities will continue on a regular basis once the Girls Mentoring Center opens.
