Review by Bret Walker

Wes Craven comes through with yet another spectacular sequel, the reported third in the trilogy (although whether this is indeed the end is yet to be seen!), to the Scream series. Anyone who has seen either of the first two knows that this one has got to be teriffic, and yes, it is.

The premise this time is that someone is killing the cast of the third movie in the order that their characters die in the movie. Unfortunately, the script has undergone so many revisions that no one is really sure who is next. Of course, just as soon as we've figured out our killer's next move, he turns the tables on us and surprises everyone, especially his next prey. In a very Return of the Jedi-like ending, we find our protagonist Sidney face to face with the killer who is all to happy to disclose his/her (I'm not giving it away!!!) reasons for killing everyone in sight, and getting the snot beat out of (fill in pronoun here) the whole time.

While the story sounds predictable and drab, it isn't. Veterans of the first two of the series will understand why. Wes Craven seems to take particular delight in crafting this series, and it's exciting to see suspense and horror finding its niche again in the anals of Hollywood film. In the rich tradition of Hitchcock, Craven keeps us guessing (and making ourselves nuts doing so) right up until the end, when a collective "Huh?" goes up from the audience. Once again he has snookered us, and we leave the viewing glowing and only partly ashamed at having been drawn in once again.

If you have seen the first two films, see this one. If you haven't seen those, see them, then see this one. In fact, make a weekend of it. A Scream weekend is a good time for all involved. Just bring your Depends®.

Trivia:

Jamie Kennedy, who appears briefly in a posthumous video as Randy Meeks, has been quite busy since his debut performace as Sampson in William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996), appearing in 21 films in 4 1/2 years. That's almost five film projects per year!
