Mixed Metaphors - June 24, 2002

Everything began as a lark -
with no time like the present
to play the only game in town.

In a twist of fate,
the trails and tribulations
of every armchair quarterback
couldn't even get to first base
in the dog days of summer
never mind make its way
onto the infamous hidden agenda.

Taking the plunge
instead of throwing in the towel,
the phrase of "look before you leap"
took on a different intent and purpose.

So it was,
that we once were
young and foolish,
eschewing the wisdom of the ages
for the shroud
of existentialist angst,
filled with Freudian slips
even as we
laid claim to this being
just fun and games.
