Untitled - June 30, 2002

It's the thin layer of darkness
barely covering the frozen middle,
that melts under the summer heat.

Every cut
breaking the smooth surface
sinking slowly into a thick haze
of sweetness
until you hit rock bottom;
and the path is reversed
to exposed the underlying coldness
to the world.

The chill is a pleasant surprise
against the sweet layers in between,
lingering in the memory,
until everything else melts
away.
