Doing what was expected
meant that well trodden road
and no real expectation left unfulfilled.
Doing what another might,
meant retreat in the face of adversity;
meant surrender to overt disapproval;
meant failure to living up to their own ideals.
Justice was a cruel mistress
that rarely saw the balance
between what reality permitted
and the situation demanded.
History is the own master
that moulds and judges the actions
and expectations
against the measure of time --
changing under each successive regime -
for better or worse.
