Dance of the Vampires
"It's a promise that was made,
We've been promises for years!"
I've wanted Jim Steinman to have a show to have a show since I was twelve years old. And ofcourse, I believed him when he said Neverland was coming out in a few years.  I renewed my research in highschool only to find the wait could be painfully endless.  Sadly, due to anti-Steinman (and anti-Kunze) influences on this show, I am still waiting.
"We're living in a powder keg awaiting the spark!"
My posts to the Jim Steinman weblist where I listed everything I could about the changes from show to show during previews seemed to have been very well recieved. In case you missed 'em, I've posted my emails here
The Evolution of DotV
I have so many "If Only"s with this show, and Jim's musicals in general.  If only they didn't mess with the book, then I'd be discovering the extent of theatrical intoxication at the Minskoff right now! If only Michael Kunze had been more involved from the beginning.  Ives is a master; Jim is insane and Kunze is just plain cool; their collective creative minds could not have written that book.
"If only I could loose this hunger
If only it didn't mean so much"
Jim has a tendency to write everything as Neverland. He should learn to hide it so that instead of undermining the story at hand, it can be more like an esoteric secret for the innitiated . His dialog tends to be rhythmic spoken word, and that cannot be an entire script. An audience won't be able to relate to characters who never speak the way they do. Tone and the craft of tightening a scene are not his strong points. (someone should probably break it to him that Wagner's not a very good storyteller). A simple script doctor could make his works forces to be reckoned with. But otherwise, it may burst the door open for contradicting influences to make their "improvements."
"There are things that must be magic
There's no explaining why or how."
Though some of the experience of this show was a bit distressing, mostly, it was an adventure. It's an extraordinary world to walk through, and it will never run out of new things to show you. Yes, Dance of the Vampires was a bad show, but listen.  There's magic there you can't afford to miss.
"I can't afford to wait,
or the magic will be taken
I don't want to loose it;
there can never be too much"
