After the October 16th performance: hello, i also went last night, so i can anwer read my apocalypse isn't new. it's the scene where von krolock bites sarah. it's beautiful, but i think the vienna version was longer. and the confrontation scene is a little different. not better or worse, just different. i couldn't really understand everything crawford was saying, unfortunately, but the music was good. the devil may care but i don't and the whole invitation to the ball scene is rather depressing for me. in the vienna production it's like jim's trying to kill me with the extreme bombast of the moment. in the broadway version that feeling in this scene is totally lost but then braver than we are, say a prayer, and the act one finale happened and i went bye bye. and the finale of tonight is what it means to be young is SO MUCH FUN. i just wanted to get up and dance. and yeah, he kept the "young" line, yay! i literally could not walk straight when it was over, i've never been so high in my life. it may have its problems, but it won't matter. jim's still in there, and you're all going to love it! see you in november! - M |
After the October 17th performance: hello, i kinda also went back a second time after having seeing the first preview performance. it just gets under your skin and won't leave. you can only obey i'm aching for the next time i go back, but sigh, so much work to do, graduating and all. i don't have time to be writing this email, but i figured it's a good break for sanity's sake. i went on thursday night, and my seat was sixth row center. i had a heart attack when i sat down because i didn't realize how dead center my seat was. so worth the splurge! as fucking awesome as my seat was i had the misfortune to sit next to the absolute worst person you want to be sitting next to when all you want to do is revel. he was only 19, but we started talking and i asked him if he was a student, he got a little defensive. he's like "no, i'm a performer." so he was an actually accomplished actor who was there to see his friends in the production. ugh, let's put it this way. when "don't leave daddy" started he leaned over and said, "you like this?" granted, i am crazy and in my red goth shirt possibly a little hard to take seriously, but still, come on. but he was the kind of person to talk to everyone around him to get their opinions, so it was good to hear what non jim biased people thought of it. mostly the feeling was that people loved it. it's not without its problems but it's really enjoyable. so yay there was really only one noticable change between the two performances. if you don't want new lyric spoilers before you see it yourself, then don't highlight it. ( during the reprise of "death is such an odd thing" when they sing "[something something] it'll take your breath. the answer to the question, is there sex after death?" they're not in the coffin yet, and rebecca tries to "bring it home" or whatever. then they sing "death is such an odd thing" more times so that they have time to get into the coffin. also when the dream version of alfred gets back into the bed he's more, i dunno, loving the darkside. ) on wed. when i saw it, i liked mandy gonzalez but wasn't blown away. but i was also mindful of the fact that this was her first performance and she was probably so nervous that she wanted to run back stage and puke. but i gotta say, MANDY ROCKS! omg, i love her! i wasn't that blown away by total eclipse on wed. but she really got into it on thursday. and when she starts "tonight is what it means to be young," oh, yes. oh, yes. she is the absolute most perfect person for this. thank you, mandy! crawford does too much rhythmic grunting and not enough singing for my taste. i understand that it's probably not the easiest thing to sing, but i can't ride the words if he doesn't sing. which isn't to say that he doesn't belt it well, cause he does. the actor sitting next to me didn't like max von essen, and as frustrating as he may have been he would know what he was talking about. but i love him! i wasn't really into for sarah, but when he performs it, omigod, the song suddenly became necessary. but the second time around he didn't take his shirt off in the transfusion scene, and that's too bad 'cause that's a good moment. and, um, yeah, it adds to the intimacy of the scene and rene auberjonois is just plain wonderful! i actually don't have a problem with the finale. the only character you don't know what happens to is heidelberg. i'm a theater layman so i didn't even notice how it was toned down. it's just supposed to be a party, and for me it works. i just wanna get up and dance! it's so much fun! so how much longer until i go back? sigh, way too long well, back to the trenches of midterms and thesis type stuff. later all! - M |
