Two types of bullets
Hollow base bullets with 2 smooth cannelures

The bullet in the foreground has a round head and the bullet standing in the background is a hollow point bullet with a copper jacket. At the crime scene two different types of bullets have been found. Two bullets were uncoated lead hollow base bullets. A copper jacket found close to 1234 Locust indicates that one hollow point bullet has been fired, as well. As part of hollow point bullets the copper jacket has to restrict the expansion of the lead projectile.
Some authors (Paul Mulshine, Thomas Clough, Michael Schiffmann) claim Daniel Faulkner has been killed with a hollow point bullet. Schiffmann even mentions mushrooming of this type of bullets. In reality the deadly bullet was a hollow base bullet. In 1981 only the company Federal produced this type of ammunition. The second picture shows hollow base bullets. After firing such a bullet from a short-barreled gun it could expand. This is completely different from hollow point bullets, where the mushroom effect at the tip of the bullet starts after hitting a target.
