Pennine Polocrosse Club Newsletter
May 2001

Well, here it is, the first newsletter of 2001 - how exciting!
As we all know the recent foot and mouth outbreak has affected the season so far, but remember there's still plenty of tournaments, including the Regionals and the Nationals.
Don't forget though, it's essential you keep practising for these as they are not far away and your skill and horse's fitness are important in the selection process.

HORSES
Horses must be worked hard to make and keep them fit for the season, according to what they will be doing, so plenty of cantering work in the field is necessary, not just a quick 10 minute hack! There's a Doncaster practise for the Regionals the weekend before they take place there and your horses should be fit well before then.
Remember, feed is also essential to your horse's fitness and the most important rule is to feed according to weight, type and work load. If your horse is fat, feed it less bulk, but don't forget to help its energy levels through feed, they always need energy, especially for polocrosse! If you have any problems or questions about either working or feeding your horse, speak to Martin or Keith.
There's a number of members with new horses for this season, so good luck to them, especially those of you attempting to do pick-ups on bigger horses!!

NEW MEMBERS
As well as new horses there has been a considerable number of new members to our club who are all showing great enthusiasm and potential. So, welcome to you all and we hope you enjoy yourselves this season and also many more to come.

SQUADS
Well done and good luck to those of you going to the squads on the 9th and 10th of June. We hope everything goes well and a further congratulations to Laura Otter who was also selected as a reserve for the Junior squad.

TELEVISION CREW VISIT
Some much needed publicity is on the agenda for our sport - at last!! Ellen Brookes has organised for cameras from the television programme Transworld Sport to attend an upcoming tournament and include chukka footage and interviews in one of their programmes.
The filming will take place at either Liscombe Park on 30th June to 1st July or Arden on 7th and 8th June, so if you want to try and get your 5 minutes of fame, make sure you go to these tournaments and more importantly make sure you're nice to Ellen!! I'm sure small gifts wouldn't go unnoticed!!

THEY'RE BACK!!
A big welcome back to Guy Robertson and Rachel Johnson. Having returned from travelling to New Zealand, America and Thailand (and playing plenty of polocrosse along the way!) they are looking tanned and cheery, although not enjoying our typically English weather, which obviously does nothing for their tans! Anyway, it's good to have you back.
It's also good to see Olly Beckerlegge back in the saddle, although it's a somewhat larger saddle for a somewhat larger Olly - gone are the days of 11hh ponies! We hope to see more of you this season.

THEY'RE GOING!!
As we gain a Beckerlegge, we'll also be losing one towards the end of the season as Edward heads off to Western Australia. He's leaving on the 15th September for a fun-filled trip of polocrosse, travelling and some more polocrosse, let's just hope he remembers his shoes!
Well-known and trusty steed Oscar is also heading off on a trip. However, he's not going as far as Edward because he's only going up to Northumberland and will definately still be appearing on the polocrosse scene - after about 8 years he'd be confused otherwise!
