of the circumstances that surround you, you will enrich others, enrich

Leader: God, be
merciful to us and bless us; look on us with kindness, so that the whole world
may know your will; so that all nations may know your salvation.
People: May the
peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you!
Leader: May the
nations be glad and sing for joy, because you judge the people with justice and
guide every nation on earth.
People: May the
peoples praise you, O God; may all the peoples praise you!
Leader: The land has
produced its harvest; God, our God, has blessed us.
People: God has
blessed us; may all people everywhere honor him.
Today’s Communion
Bread is “Sicilian Twist”
The flag of Sicily was first adopted in
1282, after the Sicilian Vespers of Palermo. It is characterized by the
presence of the triskelion (trinacria) in its middle, the (winged) head of
medusa and three wheat ears. The three bent legs are supposed to represent good
luck and prosperity.
Sicilian Twist
“As for the blended savors which are the major characteristic of
Sicilian cooking,” Gaetano Falzone wrote after a visit to the island, “the
field in which it beats all other cuisines, it derives from the mixing not only
of the different races which have come onto Sicilian soil, of the different
civilizations, of the different cultures, but also of the different cuisines.”
This loaf reflects a fondness for the sesame seeds that may have been brought
first by Arab immigrants in the eighth century. As made by Mediterranean bakers
in America, this bread from Sicily has not only an attractive twisted shape but
a slash down its length that adds to the crust, forming a trough in which the
sesame seeds cling.
Copies of the recipe
are available on the back table.
