The Woman Taken

By Ralph W. Seager

“Ho! Rabbi, standing there –

See what we caught in our snare.”

A clutter of men in the marketplace

Came dragging a woman by her arms and hair.

They closed and opened like a fang-filled face,

Then, with a shout, spat her out

To huddle at the Rabbi’s feet

Clutching the shroud of her guilty sheet.

Her accusers ran to the ruined wall

And broke off fragments until they all

Held in their fists the verdict stone

As she lay crumpled and alone.

The Rabbi spoke above the din,

“This woman’s guilt is some man’s sin.

How then can any stone you cast

Condemn the first but not the last?”

“Ho! Rabbi, standing there –

The law is just; the law is fair.

Take a stone in your holy hand

And strike with us who so declare.”

But He stood away from the righteous band

And on his knee kneeled to see

The travesty they never saw:

The woman, broken, on the broken law.

ABC/NYS is 200 Years Old!

August 29, 1807, is the exact date of our ‘birth’.

Saturday, August 25, 2007, at Pathfinder Lodge, starting at 1 p.m. we will have an ABC/NYS Family Picnic and Party to celebrate our beginnings as a denominational family.

Food will be available from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Birthday Cake shared at 2:35 p.m.!

A short program recognizing our beginnings – some early Baptist may actually appear to tell us about our past – will follow the 200-candle cake.

Late August is a great time to visit and fellowship at Pathfinder. Twenty Baptist gathered in Pompey, N.Y. in 1807. We hope lots more than twenty can make it to this anniversary party. Knowing very well that August is not the best time for everyone, we expect to have a year-long series of events that will recognize our 200 years. Our 2008 Biennial in October will be our finale and the start of our march to 300 years.

If you plan to come we need to know! Helps us have food for all!

Remember we are still gathering as much historical data on every local church that we can. Official histories or informal reflections are all welcome.

Hope to see you August 25, 2007.
