This view shows the stage and the proscenium arch.

This photo is also taken from the balcony level. It looks through the proscenium arch into the stage area. The partially removed "hanging ceiling" splits the arch in half vertically. Vertical bars seen here supported this false ceiling.

The stage is 58 feet wide by 36 feet deep. The proscenium arch is 32 feet wide by 25 feet high. Behind the top of the arch, the stage area extends upwards another 30 feet for a total of 55 feet from stage floor to the rigging gridiron. This made it possible to "fly" scenery up into the loft for quick stage set changes. The Sampson could accommodate large stage sets from the big New York City theaters that could not be accommodated in any Rochester or Elmira theater.
