This is the south end of the old steamship boiler used to heat the Sampson. A coal bin was nearby to the right. Coal could be chuted through a small window at ceiling height above the bin. It was accessible from a wagon or truck on Commercial Avenue. Two fire pits were under the 14 foot length of the boiler. The pit at this end was much longer, running most of the length of the boiler. Note the long hoe like rod which was used to spread out the coals and remove the ashes. There are still ashes and clinkers in the pit. |
