I was on the Bainbridge the first couple of months of 1978, when I
rode her from San Diego to Yokosuka, en-route to the White Plains.
(The Navy believed in saving money when Jimmy Carter was president
and had the ever popular "no cost to the Navy" swap.) The Billy
B had just completed her workup after coming out of a yard period
in Bremerton when I got on board. I acquired some familiarity with
NTDS and the air side of the OS rate, which came in real handy when
I took my next rating exam, since you don't see either of those
on an auxillary.
