The Rheinbote (Rhine Messenger) was a long-range surface-to-surface
free-flight rocket. Developed in 1943 by Rheinmetall-Borsig, the
Rheinbote was to carry 40kg of explosive with an effective range of
160km to meet an artillery requirement. The final version consisted
of a four-stage rocket fueled by
diglycol propellant. The missile was to be launched from a simple
rail projector on a mobile trailer. The launching weight was 1,718.2kg
and length 11.4m, and it could attain a test range of 220km. Over 200
were constructed and fired against Antwerp in early 1945. |
