In 1936 was heavy 18t model - Schwerer Zugkraftwagen 18t (Sd.Kfz.9) appeared. This heavy half-tracked prime mover produced from 1939 to 1945 by FAMO, Vomag and Tatra. 2727 were produced and issued to heavy artillery and recovery units. They were used to tow 240mm heavy artillery pieces, 355mm heavy mortars and 128 Flak guns. Cost of single vehicle was 60000 RM. Small number was also mounted with 6 ton and 10 ton cranes and used by workshops. Sd.Kfz.9 were also used by Tiger units as recovery vehicles before introduction of the Bergepanther. Few were mounted with 88mm Flak guns - 8.8cm Flak 37 Selbstfahrlafette auf 18 ton Zugkraftwagen. There were 1276 in service as of March 1st of 1945.

Sd.Kfz.9 was also produced in following variants:
  • Sd.Kfz.9/1 - Drehkran (Hebekraft 6t) auf Fgst des schweren Zgkw 18t - 6 ton crane.
  • Sd.Kfz.9/2 - Drehkran (Hebekraft 10t) auf Fgst des schweren Zgkw 18t - 10 ton petrol-electric crane.
