First version of 12t model appeared in 1931, produced originally for sale to the Soviet Union by Daimler-Benz as ZD 5. Improved version - DB s7 for the German Army appeared in 1934. Development continued from 1934 to 1944 and 3450 were produced by Daimler-Benz, Krauss-Maffei, Krupp and Skoda from 1939 to 1945. According to German documentation, cost of single Sd.Kfz.8 cost 46000 RM and it took 15 months to complete it. Sd.Kfz. 8 were used to tow 150mm and 173mm artillery pieces, 105mm Flak guns and 210mm heavy mortars. There 1125 in service as of March 1st of 1945. Small number was also mounted with 88mm Flak guns - 8.8cm Flak 18 Selbstfahrlafette auf Zugkraftwagen 12t. In the post-war period, Sd.Kfz.8 was produced in Czechoslovakia and used by the Czech Army.
