USS BARBERO SSG317
A START

Crew Page

Patch submitted by Kent Khuen

Patch submitted by C.Spence (From )
It is the intention of the Growler sailors to unite all REGULUS sailors in one group. Because Barbero has no Home Page at this time a section of the Growler page will be set aside for Barbero until it has a page of it's own.
Crew members are requested to submit information, be it stories, newspager articles, pictures, or other proper data.

The editor from SCHIEFFER tells us that our book SPINDRIFT will be out "mid-August". My portion is about life on an old diesel boat, specifically Barbero, with lots of descriptions of colorful members of the crew and lots of anecdotes about the boat. There are many pictures which will be returned to me from the publisher, which I will be happy to share with you. I also have a ship's patch. What I do not have now is a scanner and the ability to use one...this will change however. If you want to link, we have a web site now under construction for SPINDRIFT. www.gundeck.com .Incidentally, the other two portions of the book are by my brothers Paul, a fighter pilot and retired RADM, and Bob, an old sea going Marine on the Wasp. Shorty has offered some great material, it will be a great contribution to this page.

Story from Chuck Spence.

Subject: Re: Regulus The best story about the Barbero would be that she was my first submarine. I qualified in submarines on her in 1956 after we made the trip from San Diego to Norfolk. That was some trip for a young farm boy from Ohio. In 1957 I was offered orders to nuclear power school in New London, Conn. I knew a couple of men who went to the Growler. One of then was Randell McClure. He was a EMC(SS) when he left the Barbero in 1958. I saw in Naval Affairs a few years ago that he had passed away. I will keep in touch Chuck

8/3/98 Help from George.
I'm going through all my old 8 millimeter footage (terrible shape) and found some odds and ends of Battle Stations Torpedo, Missile Ram out, Thanksgiving dinner, a beer ball game at Pearl and qualifications dunking, and a few other events. If the crew (members of Barbero that might be interested in seeing them I could get the material together. The film is breaking down, (emulsion is deteriorating) will look into transferring to VHS. Might be nice to have if and when the reunion comes to be. I was on the Barbero from early 1961 through most of 1963. TM3 (SS). Did some of the periscope photography. I will continue to look through my effects, I have a patch but isn't similar to the one shown. george young
