J. D. MOWRY Contract Rifle Muskets

James D. Mowry of Norwich Conn., contracted with the War Dept. to manufacture regulation rifle muskets.
All rifle muskets delivered were of the model 1861 type with the lockplates marked with his name. Mowry also was an agent for Norwich Arms Co. and specimens
exist having NORWICH lockplates and stamped on the opposite side of the wood with Mowry in an oval cartouche indicating that he may have obtained a number of arms from Norwich Arms
to fullfill one or more of his contracts. He also subcontacted barrels from Cole & Walker of Norwich and locks from C.G. Rodgers & Co. of West Chelsea.
