Welch Brown & Co. Contract Rifle Muskets

Willam W. Welch of Norfolk, Conn. contracted with the War Dept. to manufacture regulation Model 1861
rifle muskets. All rifle muskets delivered were of the Model 1861 type with parts interchangeable. These arms were
marked on the lockplates in front of the hammer, with EAGLE and U.S. over NORFOLK
in two lines, under the bolster and were dated behind the hammer, 1863.
Opposite the lockplate they were marked W.W. WELCH in an arc over NORFOLK C.T. in front of the rear locplate screw.
